When Harry S. Truman became president in 1945, he gained access to a new and powerful weapon--the atomic bomb. His decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, with a force of 20,000 tons of TNT, was a turning point in history. This new power and the demonstration of it changed U.S. relations with the world and started the Cold War and the nuclear arms race.
